Our profession dwells in the shadow of the fear of failing. We worry about structural, mechanical, and water membrane failure. We are concerned about failing to get the next project, qualified employee, promotion, or paid invoice.

However, neuroscientists’ research teaches us that the act of failing is critical to learning and cognitive growth. What can we learn from failures of others to keep us from needless failures of our own? How can we establish cultures of experimentation that embrace failure as a part of the creative process? How, as an industry, can we better communicate about our individual failures for the good of the health, safety, and welfare of society as a whole?
